Fresh out of college, Debbie Baker joined the Washington State Fair full-time in June 1982 — and she’s been shaping its story ever since. Over the past four decades, Debbie’s leadership, dedication and love for the Fair have helped guide its growth and create experiences that continue to bring our community together year after year.
Debbie helped launch the Facility Rental Department from the ground up, transforming it from a few occasional bookings into a thriving, year-round operation that now welcomes events of every size across the entire venue. Her vision turned an emerging idea into one of the most dynamic parts of our operations, helping the organization remain active and vibrant beyond Fair season.
In addition to Facility Rentals, Debbie also led Switchboard, the Box Office, Ticket Takers and Gate staff — ensuring that every guest’s experience, from the first call to the final farewell, was seamless and welcoming. Her steady leadership and caring approach set the tone for what it means to be part of the Fair family.
Now retired, Debbie leaves behind an incredible legacy of service and success. Her more than 40 years of dedication have shaped not only how the Fair operates but how it feels — a place where community, hospitality and heart come together.

At the Washington State Fair Event Center, we’re proud to partner with Steve James, whose creative energy has brought an exciting mix of fan-focused events to Puyallup throughout the years. From pop culture and collectibles to gaming, anime and holiday cheer, Steve’s events have become fan favorites that draw visitors from across the region.
Still to come this year are Washington State Horror Con in October and North Pole at the Fair this holiday season — two events that couldn’t be more different, but both capture the spirit of fun and community that defines the Event Center. Horror Con brings thrills and chills for fans who love everything spooky, while North Pole at the Fair delivers pure holiday magic with Santa photos and festive joy for all ages.
Looking ahead to 2026, we’re especially excited for Rewind Washington, a brand-new event celebrating nostalgia with special guests from film, television, music and sports. As Steve says, “Having large-scale events outside of the constraints of the big cities gives us the flexibility to grow and bring something special throughout the year to the Puget Sound region and beyond.” We couldn’t agree more — and we’re grateful to continue building these experiences together, right here in Puyallup.

At the Washington State Fair Event Center, giving back is part of who we are. Our team is proud to support the local community year-round through projects that spread kindness and lend a helping hand where it’s needed most. From collecting holiday donations for the Washington Soldiers Home and St. Francis House, to volunteering time and resources for regional causes, our staff truly embodies the spirit of service.
Most recently, members of our Washington State Fair Cares Team represented the Event Center at the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Dunes Peninsula. With the incredible support of our Fair family, guests, friends and the wider community, the team raised $5,802.72 — earning third place among Pierce County teams! It was a day filled with purpose, teamwork and hope as we joined others in taking steps toward a future without Alzheimer’s.
We’re honored to be part of such meaningful efforts and look forward to continuing our tradition of community involvement. Whether it’s through local donations, volunteerism or special events, the Washington State Fair Event Center remains dedicated to making a positive impact beyond our venue.
