Cookie Contest at Puyallup Fair Teaches Children the Art and Reward of Baking

 Puyallup, WA – Sept. 22, 2009 – Parents and grandparents taught their children more than just patty-cake while mixing up the best peanut butter cookie they could manage for the Puyallup Fair’s “C&H Sugar Parent-Child Peanut Butter Cookie Contest.” The contest was held in the Home Arts Department at the Fair, which runs through Sept. 27.

 Mary Dahlquist and Daniel Elworth of Bellevue took home the first place cash prize of $100 for their recipe “Half-Moon Peanut Butter Cookies.” Coming in second place and taking home $50 was Marlene and Jacinta Cox of Spanaway with their “Peanut Butter Cookie” recipe. In third place and winning $25, were Kim and Jacob Arnold of University Place with their “Peanut Butter Breakfast Cookies.” The first place recipe is as follows:

“Half-Moon Peanut Butter Cookies”
Mary Dahlquist and Daniel Elworth, Bellevue

Yield: 60 cookies
1 cup flour
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking soda
½ cup butter
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup peanut butter
½ tsp. vanilla
1 egg
½ tsp. cider vinegar
Melted chocolate
Crushed peanuts

Directions:
1. Sift the dry ingredients.
2. Cream butter, beat in sugar. Mix in the peanut butter, butter, vanilla, egg, and cider vinegar.
3. Add more flour if needed to make the mixture stiff enough for drop cookies.
4. Arrange by spoonfuls on a buttered cookie sheet, press flat with floured spoon, and mark with
    a floured fork.
4. Bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees.
5. Brush chocolate on half of the cookie and sprinkle the nuts on top.
