Fruity Salsa Showdown Creates a Fiesta at the Puyallup Fair
Three Men Take Top Honors
Puyallup, WA – Sept. 22, 2009 – Fruity salsas made their mark during the annual “Salsa Showdown,” held in the Home Arts Department at the Puyallup Fair, which runs through Sept. 27. The fresh, vegetarian salsa was judged on flavor, healthfulness, and ease of preparation.
Taking home first place and $100 was Steve Marshall of Olympia with his “Watermelon Cucumber Salsa with Mint.” Coming in second and winning $50 was Steve Sundberg of Olympia with “Melon Mint Basil Salsa.” In third place and winning $25 was David Hummel of Enumclaw with his “Peach-Mango Delight Salsa.” The winning Salsa Showdown recipe is as follows:
“Watermelon Cucumber Salsa”
Steve Marshall, Olympia
2 cups diced watermelon
2 cups diced peeled cucumber
2 tbsp. minced red onion
2 tbsp. finely chopped cilantro
1 tbsp. finely chopped mint
1 habanero chili, finely chopped
1 tbsp. fresh lime juice
Dash of salt
Directions:
1. Dice watermelon and cucumbers.
2. Mince onion.
3. Chop cilantro, mint and chili.
4. Combine all ingredients.
5. Add lime juice.
6. Season to taste.
Note: Excellent served with fish or pork.
