Fantastic Family Gardening at the Puyallup Fair
Puyallup, WA – Sept. 2, 2009 – Gardening is made simple by the master gardeners this year when they come to the Puyallup Fair, Sept. 11-27, to demonstrate easy, affordable, and space saving ways to garden.
Master gardeners will be on hand at the Agriculture Department on the west side of the Americraft ShowPlex to answer questions and to show off their space and money-saving methods of gardening. This year, the focus is on affordability and ease in gardening. Square and vertical growing is ideal for those who have limited space.
There will be a backyard garden display with interpretative signs for each plant. Six,
4’x 4’ square, raised bed gardens will be on exhibit. They will display root-based plants, such as tomatoes, potatoes, green onions, broccoli, and other typical grocery store vegetables.
Vertical growing can be used for many root-based plant says Bill Rigby, a Pierce County master gardener. “It’s extremely versatile for growing in small spaces,” he said. He advised this technique for anyone living with a balcony or a small yard.
The master gardeners stress how easy these techniques are for a gardener of any age. “Gardening can be fun,” said Rigby, “especially for the kids.” The plants and information available will cover the basics of gardening. Information on how to become a master gardener will also be available.
The Puyallup Fair first started in 1900. This Pacific Northwest tradition is one of the top ten fairs in the world in attendance, and features big name entertainment, the PRCA Rodeo, rides, exhibits, food, flowers, and animals.
