Pillsbury Crust Creates Berry-licious Pie at the Puyallup Fair

Puyallup, WA – Sept. 18, 2009 – Bakers brought their fruit pie creations to compete for the top three awards at Puyallup Fair’s “Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crusts Pie Baking Championship.” The judges have selected the winners of this contest, held in the Home Arts Department at the Puyallup Fair, which runs through Sept. 27.

Winners took home a cash prize, along with a ribbon, award certificate, and a Pillsbury apron. The first place winner also receives a commemorative gift and a chance to win a $1,000 grand prize at a contest comprised of all first place contest winners nationwide.

The first place winner was Tamera Battle of Tacoma with “Raz-Black-Blue Pie.” In second place was Cheryl Day of Carbonado with “Tropical Paradise Pie.” In third place was Harlee Day of Carbonado with “Hearty Strawberry Green Tomato Pie.”

The first place winner took home a cash prize of $200, with the second place winner receiving $100, and third place receiving $50. The first place recipe is as follows:

“Raz-Black-Blue Pie”
Tamera Battle, Tacoma

3 cups blackberries
2 cups raspberries
1 ½ cups blueberries
¼ cup quick-cooking tapioca
1 ½ cups sugar
¼ tsp. salt
1 tbsp. lemon juice
2 tbsp. butter
Pillsbury Refrigerated Pie Crust
1 egg white, beaten
Coarse sugar (for top)


1. Mix the berries, tapioca, sugar, salt, and lemon juice in a bowl. Let stand for 15 minutes.
2. Line 8-9 inch pie plate with bottom crust. Trim pastry even with edge of the pan.
3. Spoon berry mixture into lined pie pan.
4. Dot with two tablespoons of butter.
5. Make top crust into strips to weave into a lattice for the pie top. Trim, seal, and flute the edge. 6. Brush the top with the egg white and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
7. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes; reduce heat to 350 degrees. Bake about one hour longer
    or until crust is golden and filling is bubbling. Cool on wire rack.
