Malt-O-Meal Recipe Contest Produces Delicious Snack

 Puyallup, WA – Sept. 18, 2009 – The mouth-watering Apple Caramel Toasters Snacks hails as the winner of the “Make it with Malt-O-Meal Recipe Contest” at the Puyallup Fair, Sept. 11-27. This is only the second year that the Home Arts Department has held this competition. 

 Kathleen Seaton from Bonney Lake came in first with her “Apple Caramel Toasters Snacks” recipe, taking home $100. Coming in second and winning $50 was Donna Succo from Onalaska with her “Yummy Cookies” recipe. Third place and $25 of Malt-O-Meal coupons went to Karen Spisak from Sumner with “Tootie Fruities Surprise Cupcakes.” Along with their cash prizes, each winner also received a ribbon, award certificate, and an apron. The winning Malt-O-Meal recipe is as follows:

Apple Caramel Toasters Snacks
Kathleen Seaton, Bonney Lake

Yield: 30 treats

20 caramel squares
1 tbsp. water
2 cups Malt-O-Meal Cinnamon Toasters
30 apple chips (can be homemade or store bought)
6 oz. chocolate (melted)

1. Combine the caramel squares and water and melt in microwave for 30 seconds. Stir and repeat until caramel is smooth.
2. Crush the Toasters in a bowl or pie plate until it resembles coarse crumbs.
3. Spread caramel on one side of apple chip. Coat with the crumbs and drizzle chocolate on top. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm.
