Giant Pumpkin Tipped Scales to Set New Fair Record
Previous Fair record broken by same grower
Puyallup, WA – Sept. 21, 2009 – A full audience watched as Stan Pugh of Puyallup set his pumpkin onto the scale and watched as it read out 1,136.5 pounds making it the heaviest pumpkin the Fair has seen. The pumpkin will be on display during the Fair in the Agriculture Department through the rest of the Puyallup Fair, ending on Sept. 27.
More than 20 pumpkins were weighed, but Pugh took top honors winning $1,136.50, one dollar per pound. This pumpkin not only broke last year’s winner of 1,034 lbs grown by Dean Biss of Sedro Woolley, but also the previous Fair record of 1,050 pounds set by Pugh earlier.
Second place and $500 was taken by Joel Holland of Sumner with his pumpkin weighing in at a whopping 996 pounds. Ryan Ewing of Redmond took third place honors, winning $400 for his 991 pound pumpkin.
The junior division champion pumpkin weighed in at 622 pounds, thanks to the care and nurturing of co-growers, Breana Barker and Jon Christiani, Sumner. Second place for the juniors was taken by Amy Maggi of Bonner’s Ferry, ID, weighing 534 pounds. Cameron Jensen of Enumclaw’s 522.5 pound pumpkin took third place.
The top three pumpkins in each division will be on display in the Americraft ShowPlex for the duration of the Puyallup Fair. All of the other entries will be used for pumpkin carving each Saturday and Sunday of the Fair.
