Lavender-Lemon Coffee Cake Takes the Blue Ribbon at the Puyallup Fair

Puyallup, WA – Sept. 18, 2009 – Lately, lavender has been taking its piece of the pie in the baking world, and the winning recipe for the “Dillanos Best Quick Bread Coffee Cake Contest” confirms it. The contest was held in the Home Arts Department at the Puyallup Fair, which runs through Sept. 27.

Aimee Nolan of Puyallup received a blue ribbon and the $100 prize for her “Lavender-Lemon Coffee Cake.” Coming in second place was Jennie Lou Shirer of Milton, taking home second place honors and $50 for “LuAnn’s Coffee Cake.” Third place and $25 went to Melissa Brown of Olympia for “Blueberry Crunch Coffee Cake.” The winning recipe is as follows:

Lavender-Lemon Coffee Cake
Aimee Nolan, Puyallup

Cake Ingredients:
1 cup white sugar
1/3 cup softened butter
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 ¾ cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. baking soda
Grated zest from 1 lemon
¼ tsp. salt
1 cup sour cream
1 tbsp. lavender buds

Glaze Ingredients:
2/3 cup sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp. lavender blossoms
3 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. vanilla


Cake Directions:
1. Beat sugar, butter, and vanilla at medium speed until well-blended.
2. Add eggs.
3. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, lemon zest, and salt.
4. Add flour mixture to sugar mixture alternately with sour cream, beginning and ending with
    flour mixture.
5. Stir in lavender gently.
6. Pour the batter into a greased bundt pan.
7. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Let
    cake cook on wire rack and then remove from pan.

Glaze Directions:
1. Combine the powdered sugar and lavender in food processor, then add remaining lemon juice
    and vanilla.
2. Stir until smooth and spread over the cooling cake.
