FRIDAY RESULTS

With just 20 days left in the regular rodeo season, contestants are jockeying for position in the standings and nowhere is that more evident than right here at the Justin Boots Playoffs.
As part of the Washington State Fair, the rodeo is a very important stop for anyone hoping to be in the top 15 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association or Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings and qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).

Bill Tutor, a bareback rider from Huntsville, Texas, is one of those cowboys fighting for a spot in the world standings. He entered the rodeo in Puyallup in 16th place. On Friday afternoon, Tutor got on Growney Brothers bucking horse named Beaver Fever and had an outstanding effort. When the judges added up their scores, he was the leader of the pack with an 87.5.

However right behind him was Teddy Athan from Livermore, Calif., who scored 87 on Calgary Stampede’s Reckless Margie. Athan is 18th in the world after winning the Ellensburg, Wash., rodeo last week. Tutor’s half-point advantage may get him a bigger check in the first round, but Athan stands to win more overall here in Puyallup. He had a 77.5-point ride Friday night and leads overall with a total of 164.5 points.
Tutor, however, is on the bubble again. He scored 64 points on Friday night to have a total of 151.5, currently in sixth place. He will have to wait through the next 12 contestants to see if he is among the championship round qualifiers here.

“It’s like the standings for the NFR,” Tutor said. “I think it’s going to come down to the very last ride that someone makes. I sure hope I’m among the guys that make it, but even though the season is almost over there is still a lot of money to be won and I think it’s pretty exciting to be in the hunt.”

Saturday’s rodeos will feature 12 new contestants in each event. They have their first round at 1 p.m. and second round at 6:30. At the conclusion of Saturday night’s rodeo, preliminary rounds winners and the contestants advancing to Sunday’s championship will be determined.
